Tariffwise privacy policy

The short version. Tariffwise reads your Octopus Energy tariff and half-hourly usage, with your permission, to tell you which tariff suits you and when electricity is cheap. It can't change your account and never sees your Octopus password. We don't sell your data, show ads or track you across other apps. You can delete everything from the app at any time.

Tariffwise is made by Forge Relay Ltd, registered in England and Wales (company number 17371777), registered office 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. We are the controller of the personal data described here. Contact: ben@forgerelay.uk.

What we collect and why

When Octopus returns your name and address with your account details, our server discards them and does not store them. A postcode district typed on the welcome screen is used only to show the price preview on your phone, and is not sent to our server.

We don't use advertising, third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.

Our lawful basis

We process this data because it's necessary to provide the service you asked for (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b), performance of a contract). Notifications are optional and you can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings.

Households

If you invite someone to your household, they will see the same verdict, prices and daily score as you, which are based on your home's usage. Only invite people who live with you. The household owner can see and remove members in Settings.

Where your data is stored and who processes it

Our server, hosted in a data centre in the UK or the European Economic Area. Data is encrypted at rest. We will name the hosting provider here before Tariffwise opens beyond private testing.

Octopus Energy, the source of your tariff and usage data. Octopus's own privacy policy covers what they hold.

We don't sell or share your data with anyone else, except where the law requires it.

How long we keep it

Half-hourly usage: 13 months, so you can compare this year with last year. Then it's deleted.
Daily scores and verdicts: until you delete your account or household.
If Octopus access stops working (for example, you remove Tariffwise in your Octopus account) and you don't reconnect within 30 days, we delete your household's data.
Encrypted backups roll off within 30 days.

Deleting your data

In the app's Settings you can:

Leave a household (members): removes your access and your devices' push tokens.
Disconnect Octopus and delete the household (owner): revokes our access at Octopus and deletes the household's usage, scores, settings and tokens within 24 hours. Other members are told.
Delete your Tariffwise account (anyone): deletes your account and revokes Sign in with Apple. An owner with members first hands over ownership or deletes the household.

You can also remove Tariffwise from your Octopus account, or email us to ask for deletion.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask for it in a portable format. Email ben@forgerelay.uk and we'll respond within one month. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

Tariffwise is meant for adults who manage their household's energy. It isn't directed at children.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
